Legacy Flight Academy (LFA)

The LEGACY Flight Academy (LFA) is a unique, two-week aviation experience for students age 16-19 who have already demonstrated a sincere interest in aviation. The LFA seeks to inspire minority youth towards a career in aviation and presents military service opportunities, following in the legacy of the pioneering Tuskegee Airmen. The Inaugural 2012 class was based in historic Tuskegee, Alabama; students for future Academies will reside on campus at a predetermined sponsoring college or university.

Why The LFA?

In a word, the Tuskegee Airmen LEGACY is in jeopardy! Current statistics show that African-American represent less than 2% of pilots in both the military and commercial airlines.*  The Tuskegee Airmen “Experiment” that began over 70 years ago certainly succeeded; there were almost 1000 black aviators in the Army Air Corps at the end of WWII.  However, the fact that there are only approximately 300 black pilots in the Air Force today highlights the concern for upholding this cherished LEGACY.

Beyond sustaining this LEGACY in the air, there is the necessity to foster the character of the Tuskegee Airmen in today’s youth. “Competence, courage, commitment and capacity” – the words on the statue at the US Air Force Academy – only begin to describe this extraordinary group of Americans. The values espoused by the Tuskegee Airmen are worth emulating and the LFA seeks to do just that.

Know the LEGACY… Live the LEGACY… Grow the LEGACY.

“The power of excellence is overwhelming.
It is always in demand and nobody cares about its color.
– General Daniel “Chappie” James, USAF (Original Tuskegee Airmen)
